The Ultimate Life-Time Guide
What is an ultimate life-time guide? A philosophy? A set of ideals? A metaphorical 3-legged chair that provides a stable foundation?
What value would a life-time guide, or a set of ideals, be without harmony?
To put it another way, what quality of life would a person have without balance?
What kind of balance? What kind of harmony?
Two kinds, actually. Moderation and Alignment.
Moderation in all things:
Work and Recreation.
Food and Drink.
Responsibility and Rest.
Peaceful moments alone and Attentive attitudes towards other people.
Alignment in all things:
Alignment of one's own needs and interests with the needs and interests of other people.
This alignment forges healthful routines within one's own life.
This alignment forges healthful relationships with acquaintances, friends, and family members.
This alignment forges healthful relationships between families, communities, and nations.
Trade and Peace treaties are the fruits of this goal.
A certain United States president was speaking with reporters in the White House. He was asked what he meant by his particular word phrasing and how he accomplished his treaties with other nations.
He explained, and I paraphrase from memory (since I can no longer find the clip), "I look to American interests and tell the other leaders of countries to whom I am speaking that I expect them to look to their own country's interests. Together we will discuss our respective nation's interests and find some common ground, some situation that benefits both nations. That's how peace starts."
Micro and Macro Harmony.

Ended a debate between Senators Daniel Webster of Massachusetts and Robert Hayne of South Carolina.
Daniel Webster won the day, but with hindsight, modern citizens may side with Hayne.
Hayne re-enforced the idea of a confederation while Webster defended the idea of a federation.
In a confederacy the people may overcome tyrants quicker than in a federation, for in THAT condition, do the words of the Unites States constitution have TEETH. #AntiFederalistPaper9 http://resources.utulsa.edu/law/classes/rice/Constitutional/AntiFederalist/09.htm "We [the Aristocratic party of the United States,] do not much like that sturdy privilege of the people -- the right to demand the writ of habeas corpus. We have therefore reserved the power of refusing it in cases of rebellion, and you know we are the judges of what is rebellion...."
