The Ultimate Life-Time Guide

What is an ultimate life-time guide? A philosophy? A set of ideals? A metaphorical 3-legged chair that provides a stable foundation?

What value would a life-time guide, or a set of ideals, be without love?

To put it another way, what quality of life would a person have without love?

What kind of love?

The English language has only one word for the concept of love.

The ancient Greek language of the 1st century c.e., known as Koine Greek, had many words that represented different kinds of love.

Agape (αγαπη) is one of my favorites. See the Koine word "agape" translated into the English word "love" in one of the foundational books of Western civilization:

4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,

5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,

6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;

7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.

9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part;

10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.

11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.

12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.

13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love."

What is Koine Greek?

Bible scholars of the Christian faith are familiar with Koine, yet Koine is only one of many forms of the Greek language.

"Koine, the fairly uniform Hellenistic Greek spoken and written from the 4th century bc until the time of the Byzantine emperor Justinian (mid-6th century ad) in Greece, Macedonia, and the parts of Africa and the Middle East that had come under the influence or control of Greeks or of Hellenized rulers. Based chiefly on the Attic dialect, the Koine had superseded the other ancient Greek dialects by the 2nd century ad. Koine is the language of the Greek translation of the Old Testament (the Septuagint), of the New Testament, and of the writings of the historian Polybius and the philosopher Epictetus. It forms the basis of Modern Greek.

The divergences of the Koine from classical norms gave rise in the 1st century ad to a purist movement known as Atticism, which had little effect on the everyday spoken language although it influenced the written language, causing it to have archaizing tendencies.

"Hellenistic and Roman [aka Koine] phase (4th century bce to 4th century ce)" ~ Cornelis Jord Ruijgh, britannica.com/topic/Greek-language

Alexander the Great's teacher, Aristotle, is represented by one of the two figures in the center of the Raphael's School of Athens fresco.

Aristotle is on the right gesturing towards the ground; his own teacher, Plato, stands on the left and points to the sky.

(Koine Greek began around the time of Alexander the Great.)

On this date 193 years ago...

Ended a debate between Senators Daniel Webster of Massachusetts and Robert Hayne of South Carolina.

Daniel Webster won the day, but with hindsight, modern citizens may side with Hayne.

Hayne re-enforced the idea of a confederation while Webster defended the idea of a federation.

In a confederacy the people may overcome tyrants quicker than in a federation, for in THAT condition, do the words of the Unites States constitution have TEETH. #AntiFederalistPaper9 http://resources.utulsa.edu/law/classes/rice/Constitutional/AntiFederalist/09.htm "We [the Aristocratic party of the United States,] do not much like that sturdy privilege of the people -- the right to demand the writ of habeas corpus. We have therefore reserved the power of refusing it in cases of rebellion, and you know we are the judges of what is rebellion...."
