What is Unicode, anyway?

It's something most of us use every single day without even knowing it! The ubiquitous Unicode Standard!

"Short version - In the early days of computing, each character was represented by a single byte (8 bit, 256 possible values). That meant you could only display a max of 256 distinct characters. Unicode was a way to extend that to 2-byte representation (16-bit or 65536 distinct values). But even that wasn't quite enough, so there's what are called "code pages", where in addition to the 16-bit value, you have a corresponding "code page" that tells you what characters those 65536 values actually represent. For instance, one code page might be used for some Korean characters, while those same 16-bit values might represent Arabic characters under a different code page" ~ @TheFamilyITDude
